Road to the Kentucky Derby Explained
Graded stakes are so 2012!
Churchill Downs abandoned graded stakes earnings to determine which 20 horses will qualify for the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
The new Road to the Kentucky Derby format uses points to detmine who will qualify for the 2013 Run for the Roses. Similar to the points systems used by the PGA Tour, events will have a total number of points to be awarded to the top performing thoroughbreds. After the end of the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the 20 thoroughbreds with greatest number of accumulated points will determine the field for the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
The new system is broken into two parts: Kentucky Derby Prep Season & Kentucky Derby Championship Series.
Kentucky Derby Prep Season
The Kentucky Derby Prep Season consists of 19 races between September 2012 and February 2013. These races each consist of a 10-4-2-1 point structure for the top performaing horses. Winning a Prep race will give the horse 10 points, place will award four points, show will award two points, and a fourth place finish receives a single point. Kentucky Derby Championship Series
The Kentucky Derby Championship Series is comprised of three-leg collection of 17 marquee races which occur over a 10-week stretch before the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
Performing well in Championship Series races will ultimately determine the thoroughbred's who qualify for the Kentucky Derby due to the increase in points awarded to top performing thoroughbreds. Click here to see the Kentucky Derby Championship Series Schedule»
