5 Facts to Know About the Kentucky Derby Museum

The Kentucky Derby Museum is a non-profit organization that has been preserving and educating about the history and legacy of the Kentucky Derby® since 1985. Over 230,000 people visit the Louisville staple every year to explore the iconic event’s past. 

There is a lot to learn while visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum, but there are also a few things you should know before you go!


1. The Kentucky Derby Museum is located next to the Churchill Downs® property, not on it.

Contrary to popular belief, the Kentucky Derby Museum is not technically part of Churchill Downs®. However, the museum is located right outside the track gates and is about as close as you can get. Keep reading to find out how you can get a walking tour of the track when visiting the museum!



2. The Kentucky Derby Museum has a 360°, 4K high-resolution screen.

 “The Greatest Race” is an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its rich history that plays every hour in the round theater. The enormous screen is one of the largest in the world and delivers a truly unique experience where guests feel immersed in the movie.


3. The museum features two floors of interactive exhibits, tons of Kentucky Derby memorabilia, a gift shop, café and much more!

With so much to see and do at the Kentucky Derby Museum, horse racing fanatics and novices alike will easily spend a few hours absorbing everything they can during a visit.


4. A General Admission ticket includes a 30-minute Historic Walking Tour of Churchill Downs.
